Following my participation at Web Summit in Portugal, I reflected on the role of networking in business—at least the way I see it. Many would define networking in simple terms: meeting new people who share the same profession or industry. For me, it goes far beyond that.
Networking, to me, is not only about meeting fascinating new people but also about maintaining existing relationships, sharing knowledge, reflecting on my entrepreneurial journey, and offering support where it’s needed. All of this fuels career growth, personal development, and that inner sense of fulfillment that comes from exchanging ideas and perspectives—which in turn sparks creativity and inspiration.
I believe networking contributes to our social well-being and has far deeper implications than we often realize. And while we tend to see it through a professional lens, it is often also the birthplace of meaningful friendships that begin with collaborations and work relationships.
Networking also expands our visibility—of who we are, what we stand for, what we believe in, and the value we bring to others. If we truly want to serve as many people as possible with our unique essence, being visible is an excellent starting point.
Here are five ways I’ve decided to nurture networking on my journey:
- Attending events, conferences, and workshops that focus on learning, connection, and sharing.
- Participating in online communities and platforms where advice, ideas, and resources are freely shared for collective benefit.
- Joining professional associations and organizations that represent certain values and higher purposes within an industry or country.
- Seeking opportunities for mentoring and coaching, where I build relationships with more experienced professionals, gain new perspectives, and learn new skills.
- Using social media, which is an excellent tool for building a genuine network of people.
I feel that if networking used to be seen as a burden—or an uncomfortable necessity—today, thanks to the online environment, it has become an area we can grow meaningfully, with impact, and even regulate to a level that is both beneficial and enjoyable. 🙂
